The letter was signed by U.S. Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., along with U.S. Reps. Carlos Giménez, R-Fla., María Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., and Mario Díaz-Balart, R-Fla.

In the letter, the lawmakers referenced an Aug. 18 event in Key Largo where the U.S. Attorney’s office “failed to decline charges against five people caught smuggling Chinese and Ecuadorian nationals aboard a small vessel,” the letter explained.

However, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and 16th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Dennis Ward stepped in to “detain and prosecute” the people involved.
