Chicago Teachers Union Head Takes Issue With Report on the #Mathz

WATCH: This morning, Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates issued a response to school district analysis showing just 52 of the union’s 700+ contract demands would effectively bankrupt Chicago Public Schools, causing a $4B deficit.

“Art teachers, physical education teachers, music teachers, band directors, orchestra conductors, coaches for basketball, coaches for cheerleading. That’s what’s going to send the district into bankruptcy? Come on people.”

Remember now - this is the same woman who can't pay her own water and garbage bills, so take her dismissal of any financial objections with a grain of salt. She does the #mathz for her union demands worse than any of the kids in failing ChiTown schools who can't do math, period.

...Below are CTU’s actual ideas for new revenue, taken from a newsletter sent to union members last week.

Note that these are all highly speculative/vague (sue banks, “clawback” money from vendors, close unnamed loopholes), extremely unpopular (tax hospitals, pass the progressive income tax which voters already rejected in 2020), or could already be done by the mayor the union elected (sweep TIF funds).

Remember that the district would face a $4B deficit if they accepted just 52 of the CTU’s 700+ demands, effectively bankrupting the schools. CPS has nearly doubled state+local funding since 2012 and now spends $30K/student.

This is all unserious posturing. Does nothing for kids. Wastes a lot of time. And ultimately distracts from the real issue: the unsustainable debt and tax burden CTU is demanding to fund their political machine.
