Facebook Marketplace Meet-Ups Can Be Very Dangerous

Prosecutors have charged a man with firing shots and robbing a man after luring him into a trap via social media. Chicago police issued a community alert on May 24 warning about a string of similar robberies that occurred on and near the same block.

Jeron Fears, 18, was detained by Judge Shauna Boliker while he awaits trial on charges of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Around 7:50 p.m. on May 23, a family traveled to the 7100 block of South Langley so one of them could buy a motorcycle they saw advertised on Facebook Marketplace.

Fears met them, asking to see the money they brought, and then leading three of the family members down a gangway, according to prosecutors. As they walked down the gangway, Fears allegedly pulled out a gun, demanded the first man’s phones, and ordered another victim to return to the truck and get the envelope of cash. Prosecutors said part of the gangway encounter was caught on video.
