The NFL Got Its Butker Kicked

So I’m not overly shocked that Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker got an invite to speak at a college commencement. I was, however, shocked that the speech generated so much controversy.

In no time flat, the NFL condemned the content of the speech. They threw Butker under the bus—something they didn’t do with Colin Kaepernick, who disrespected the entire nation blatantly, nor did they do with any other athlete who did the same, all while “on the clock.”

And how did that work out for them?

Well, it didn’t.

One point here is key: the NFL goes out of its way to defend players who behave badly or offer opinions on all sorts of issues. Why couldn't they defend a player whose only apparent 'transgression' was to discuss his faith publicly? Or just keep their yaps shut about it?
