New Polls: No Prison Time for Trump -- Even Among Those Supporting Trial

Two surveys since the verdict show that slightly more Americans say Trump shouldn’t go to prison than say he should:

A significant number of Americans who approve of the Manhattan trial feel this way. For instance, in the CBS poll, Americans said that the trial was fair, 56 to 44 percent, and that the verdict was correct, 57-43. So Americans believe in the trial and outcome by double digits, but they still lean against prison time.

Duane and I argued about this in Friday's Week in Review, and I still think Alvin Bragg won't ask for prison time. He'll want to walk away with a win in making "convicted felon" a tag line for Trump but not look too overtly intent on interfering with the campaign.

One more point on the polls: if we take them at face value (and these are snap-ish polls, so big grains of salt), then we should wonder whether the conviction will have a corrosive effect on Trump's standing. I tend to see this as more of an elite-circles phenomenon, however.
