After a week of voting in a tight race, the workers at Mercedes-Benz’s Alabama plant have opted against unionizing its shop.
On Friday, workers at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International decided to not join the United Auto Workers union, with 56% of workers voting against the proposed union. Ultimately, the vote to unionize failed 2,642 to 2,045.

Workers from the Vance plant, located outside Tuscaloosa, as well as a battery plant in the neighboring town of Woodstock, took part in the vote. The votes will be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
The vote comes after the UAW had a significant win with workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee voting to unionize last month.
