Yellen can claim to be regretful because there is no price to pay. All of this is reminiscent of the 2012 episode when the entire Democratic Party mocked Mitt Romney for calling Russia a top geopolitical threat. Recall that it was around this time Biden was leading the “reset,” and Obama gave Putin whatever he asked. It was only in 2016, when it was politically expedient to pretend that Russia was stealing our democracy for Donald Trump, that Democrats apologized to Romney.

They do this all the time. Yellen isn’t fooling anyone.

And it's not as if they weren't warned about what the American Rescue Plan's massive $1.8 trillion stimulus would create. Larry Summers publicly warned that the full effects of two tranches of pandemic stimulus had not yet worked its way through a shutdown-bottlenecked economy, the latest tranche of which had just begun to roll out at the time. Summers warned in February 2021 that the economy may already be overheating and that further stimulus on this scale would create prolonged and massive inflation -- which is exactly what happened. The "transitory" comment for which Yellen is now apologizing was ludicrous even at the time.
