Wilson's release will end a disappointing chapter for both sides. The Broncos went 11-19 in Wilson's starts over two seasons and failed to make the playoffs. Payton benched Wilson with two games remaining in 2023, a move that effectively marked the end of Wilson's career in Denver.

The Broncos signed Wilson to a five-year, $242.6 million deal after his arrival and will take an $85 million hit in dead money over the next two seasons because of the release.

It's been my impression that Denvers dismal record over these two seasons has less to do with Wilson's performance than it does in Denver's failure to build a proper team around him that suits his style. Having three head coaches in two years didn't help either.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean Wilson has any gas left in the tank as a starter. ESPN's Legwold thinks the Steelers may want Wilson for next season, or the Vikings, who have their own issues with overpaid QBs. I'd love to see him help season up Kenny Pickett.
