Are Dems Stuck With Biden -- Or Playing a Long Con?

Ok, you might say, if two seasoned pundits are coming to the same conclusion, doesn’t that strengthen the case that Bide will, in fact, be the nominee?

Maybe so. But it doesn’t take a conspiracy nut to think that something else is afoot here.

For one thing, if defeating Donald Trump is the Democrats’ paramount concern (to “save democracy” and all), Biden staying in the race seems like the worst possible choice. He is hugely unpopular, and that’s not likely to change. Minorities and independents are gravitating toward Trump. Biden’s physical and mental state will only get worse, and his decline is by all evidence, accelerating. It’s an open question whether he’d agree to, or would be able to, debate Trump.

Hanlon's Razor applies here: Never attribute to conspiracy that which can be adequately explained by incompetence. And not just the incompetence of Biden, although that certainly applies, but the incompetence of the party in failing to prepare for this clearly foreseeable situation. They don't HAVE a viable alternative; Gavin Newsom tried to force himself into that position, but his California is a political and economic catastrophe.

Also, the I&I editorial board's idea that this is a psy-op to leave Trump and Republicans "unprepared" for a late switch isn't terribly convincing either. Everyone knows that risk, and yet GOP primary voters don't really care. Hanlon's Razor applies here too.
