House Republican: On Second Thought, Maybe McCarthy Wasn't So Bad

After House Republicans failed to approve a standalone Israel aid bill and the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday evening, at least one House Republican has concluded that ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was a mistake. ...

"Getting rid of Speaker McCarthy has officially turned into an unmitigated disaster. All work on separate spending bills has ceased," wrote Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie on X. "Spending reductions have been traded for spending increases. Warrantless spying has been temporarily extended. Our majority has shrunk."

Ed Morrissey

As I repeatedly warned at the time, McCarthy had a lousy hand and did the best he could to play it. Republicans only controlled the House by a four-vote margin while Democrats control the White House and Senate. How did removing a skilled parliamentarian and prolific fundraiser like McCarthy do anything about that reality? McCarthy at least would have known better to avoid losing an impeachment vote; putting a backbencher in charge has been a disaster, as we saw yesterday. I'm no fan of Massie, but he's right.
