GOP Leads Dems on NBC's Generic Congressional Ballot Poll

Republicans hold a 4-point lead over Democrats on a generic congressional ballot for the upcoming election, according to the latest NBC News poll.

When asked which party they preferred to see win control of the Congress in November, 49% of respondents said Republicans and 45% said Democrats, the latest NBC News survey found.

That increased the GOP’s November lead, which was 47% to 45%.

As veteran observers are aware, that’s a significant lead in this polling type. Generally speaking, Democrats have to be at +4 or +5 to achieve a break-even point, thanks to the structure of the House and the urban bias in polling. A GOP +4 result signals a significant margin of victory in House races. This is just one poll, but the RCP aggregate average has Republicans up 2.4 points at the moment, too (with the NBC poll included).
