The original Top Gun movie, which starred Tom Cruise as Maverick, a daring young pilot who goes through an intense training program to become the best of the best, was a huge hit when it was released back in 1986. The film quickly became a cultural phenomenon and has since become a classic of the action genre. Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel released in 2021, was also a commercial success, cementing the appeal of the franchise.
The new movie promises to bring even more thrills and excitement with Tom Cruise reprising his role as the iconic Maverick. The plot of the new film is being kept under wraps, but it is known that it will be set in the modern-day with updated technology and equipment. The movie will also feature new cast members, including a younger generation of pilots who will challenge Maverick’s skills.
[Wasn’t that the plot line for Top Gun: Maverick too? Don’t get me wrong — I enjoyed the sequel, even more than I enjoyed the original, and the practical effects wowed me in the theater too. But what more can be done in this format? The Mission: Impossible franchise has a lot more room for new plots and new characters as well as allowances for aging actors, but unless Maverick is moving to a barnstorming troupe, his naval-aviator days should be long over by now. It sounds like a regurgitation of TG2M at best. — Ed]
