The man who fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy in Mississippi during a traffic stop last week had a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1998.

Law enforcement in the state continues to mourn the death of George County Sheriff’s Deputy Deputy Jeremy Malone, who was killed Thursday after stopping a car driven by Rickey Powell, 43.

After the fatal encounter in Lucedale, Powell sped off, and responding officers gave chase.

Powell ultimately was shot and killed by police, who trailed him across three counties.
