Sky News Arabia reported on Wednesday that Abbas had confirmed that the PA is ready to assume power in Gaza, citing Palestinian sources.
Netanyahu responded to the report by stating “as long as I am the prime minister of Israel – this will not happen.”
“Those who educate their children for terrorism, finance terrorism and support terrorist families, will not be able to rule Gaza after eliminating Hamas,” said Netanyahu.
[Of course, Netanyahu may not be PM for long after the end of the active military phase of the war. He still faces a trial on corruption charges, and the intel failures that led to 10/7 will almost certainly cost Netanyahu his career. Others in the unity government may be more inclined to work the PA into a governing role in Gaza, especially with the Biden administration leaning heavily on Jerusalem to that end, but it won’t be with Abbas in charge. The other Sunni nations consider him a non-starter too. It would require another election in the West Bank, one in which Hamas or any other Iranian proxy gets excluded. — Ed]
