Time to Cinema-Party Like It's 1999

The ‘80s has “Stranger Things,” “The Wedding Singer” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” to name just a few movies honoring the decade. The ‘90s? We’re still waiting, and flops like “Mid90s,” Jonah Hill’s respectable debut as writer/director, don’t count.

It’s still the last decade when free speech reigned supreme. Political correctness began in that era, but it didn’t fully take over Hollywood … yet.

What’s undeniable? The ‘90s wrapped with a remarkable year for film. Stunning, even.

[I agree with most of this list, except for “American Beauty” — which was a mind-numbing Leftist didactic filled with Hollywood clichés about the suburbs, family life, the military, and the Genius of Youth. It was easily the worst Oscar winner until “The Shape of Water,” which basically resurrected all of the same clichés, and added a few more. “American Beauty” frustrated me at the time (the performances were excellent) and I’d dare anyone to watch it now and still defend it as something worth watching. — Ed]
