Former Michigan Republican Rep. Peter Meijer announced Monday that he is running for U.S. Senate to replace retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., more than a year after he lost the GOP primary for his seat to a challenger endorsed by former President Donald Trump. …
He is entering a crowded GOP primary field, which includes prominent figures such as former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig as well as seven other candidates.
[Meijer was one of ten House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in 2021, which is what prompted the primary challenge in 2022 that Meijer lost. He’s a solid nat-sec Republican, and that might appeal to Michigan’s GOP primary voters this time around — but then again, so is Rogers and without the impeachment baggage. Meijer can put a lot of money behind his primary bid, but Rogers will likely get more institutional-donor support. — Ed]
