[Pay attention to the math that Chad Pergram explains. The Speaker vote requires a majority of the members who answer the quorum call before the ballot. If Republicans don’t show up, or if they vote present rather than nay, the threshold of the majority drops. Hakeem Jeffries could end up winning the Speaker election under those circumstances even without a single Republican vote in his favor. If he loses more than the 22 he lost in the last ballot, Jordan should recognize reality and go back into conference to find someone who hasn’t already angered a significant chunk of the caucus. — Ed]
