The 124-81 vote came after Jordan, a founder of the House Freedom Caucus who became an ally of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy in recent years, lost an internal House Republican conference vote to Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana earlier this week. …
Now, Jordan faces the same challenge Scalise did: Whether he can earn the support of 217 Republicans needed to win a floor vote. It’s not clear whether he’ll be able to do so, especially with raw feelings throughout the conference after another chaotic week.
[But … ]
House is going home. No Speaker vote tonight. Second vote to back Jordan on the floor was 152-55-1.

[There are far more House Republicans balking at Jordan than there were with Scalise. And Jordan only got 11 more votes than Scalise did, for that matter. Now they’re all going home rather than discuss it further this weekend, as it’s pointless to attempt any campaigning with all of the bitterness in the caucus at the moment. The House GOP collapse continues. Jordan may force a floor vote on Monday anyway just to get the balkers on record so he can start pressuring them, but Kevin McCarthy had a lot more support than this in January, and it still took 15 ballots. — Ed]
