Now Starbucks starts closing stores in San Francisco

That corporate-speak doesn’t say much, but it’s hard not to think that crime and the city’s deteriorating street conditions didn’t play a major factor in this wide-scale shutdown. Starbucks has been known to jump into woke causes, then dodge woke consequences. It’s not surprising to see the coffee chain go mum on the crime issue.

[Let’s put it this way. If those stores were both profitable and safe, they’d remain open. Either the issue is profit, from which we could conclude that Bidenomics is forcing stores to close, or it’s safety, and there’s ample evidence in that city of crime reaching existential levels for retailers. It’s most likely both. CBS has the memo, and it’s clearly focused on San Francisco, so it’s not as though Starbucks has to downsize for macro-financial reasons. — Ed]
