Emmer demurs on Speaker, aims for Majority Leader instead

Rep. Tom Emmer, who currently serves as majority whip, will seek the majority leader position, a source familiar with the situation confirmed with Alpha News.

The Minnesota congressman’s bid to take the number-two spot in GOP leadership comes after Tuesday’s historic ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House.

[That makes the crowd at the top a little smaller, and it’s a good move up for Emmer if he can win it. If Scalise loses the speaker vote to Jordan (or someone else), though, it’s not clear whether the caucus will want to move him out in favor of Emmer. I’m not quite clear on whether all the positions will come up for a vote, or only those where the current officer gets elected to something else. — Ed]
