The Minnesota congressman’s bid to take the number-two spot in GOP leadership comes after Tuesday’s historic ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House.

[That makes the crowd at the top a little smaller, and it’s a good move up for Emmer if he can win it. If Scalise loses the speaker vote to Jordan (or someone else), though, it’s not clear whether the caucus will want to move him out in favor of Emmer.
