House Republicans passed an amendment Wednesday to slash Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s annual salary to $1, a legislative maneuver they have been vowing to pull in an attempt to censure Biden Cabinet members whom they think have failed to adequately do their job.
The amendment was introduced by Georgia GOP Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene during the debate over the fiscal 2024 spending bill.
“This is the first time in the 118th Congress the Holman rule has been used to hold a Biden official accountable. It’s time for more,” Greene wrote on social media, referring to a House ruling dating back to the 1870s that allows amendments to appropriations legislation that would reduce the salary of a specific federal employees.
The measure passed on a voice vote.
