If you were surprised to see Russell Wilson still in the game while down by 50 points, you aren’t the only one.
The Miami Dolphins put on the offensive clinic of a lifetime Sunday — dismantling the Denver Broncos 70-20 and nearly breaking the all-time scoring record in an NFL game. Yet with no chance of winning, the Broncos left their starting quarterback out there to take the beating.
In fact, backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham is the only one of Denver’s 47 available players who never saw the field Sunday.
[This came up in an earlier game in which a team kept their starting QB during a massive beating. The Dolphins had pulled their starters in this game during the second half but still kept on scoring, rolling up 726 yards and 70 points over the Broncos. The only reason that might justify their decision to keep Wilson in the game was the hope that he might get the offense going enough to keep Miami’s offense off the field and stop the beating at some point. Otherwise, Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard is correct in his criticism. — Ed]
