Nine Republican presidential hopefuls to attend Faith and Freedom banquet in Des Moines Saturday

Nine Republican presidential candidates will be arriving in Iowa Saturday, ready to make a fresh attempt at wooing social conservatives and evangelicals at Iowa’s annual Faith and Freedom Coalition fall banquet.

The event comes the same week Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives opened a formal impeachment inquiry into Democratic President Joe Biden over his and his son’s dealings with foreign operatives. And it comes amid a post-Labor Day push by campaigns to begin consolidating support among likely caucusgoers in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

Evangelicals have been a particularly influential group of caucusgoers in past years, typically showing up to caucus in above-average proportions and making up well over half the electorate.

Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition President Steve Scheffler said on a recent taping of Iowa Press that his organization is hoping to introduce its members to the candidates and then step aside to let them make the decisions.

“I view our organization as a matchmaker, not a kingmaker,” he said.
