Rogers is the first prominent Republican to declare his candidacy after longtime Democratic senator Debbie Stabenow announced her retirement ahead of the 2024 election. Republican sources told Fox News that the National Republican Senatorial Committee persuaded Rogers to run.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who in February announced her candidacy, will likely be the Democratic nominee.

Rogers’s entry into the race has the potential to make Republicans competitive in the state as they aim to win back a Senate majority in 2024. The GOP needs to flip one or two seats, depending on who wins the White House.

[Rogers will make a solid nominee in an important and high-profile fight for the open seat in Michigan. He’d be helped by an appealing nominee at the top of the ticket, but Rogers can appeal on his own too, as long as the GOP nominee doesn’t undercut him. — Ed]
