New: Judge dismisses Hunter's tax charges ... for now

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika dismissed the charges at the request of Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss who had asked the court to do so last week after the plea deal fell apart in court as both sides failed to agree on whether its terms stipulated that Hunter Biden would be immune from facing future related charges.

The dismissal allows for Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, to be charged with the same or new offenses that could be tested in trial.

[This isn’t what it looks like, at least for the moment. This allows Weiss to clear the decks, at least ostensibly, to give a fresh look at charging decisions in the case. Will that actually happen? I’m skeptical; based on Weiss’ attempts to slam a sweetheart plea deal through the first time, I assume this is just window-dressing for a second bite at that apple. Still, this dismissal without prejudice would have to be a first step to reconsideration of the case no matter what Weiss eventually intends to do. — Ed]
