The Michigan attorney general announced felony charges on Tuesday against 16 people in a case involving Trump supporters’ attempt to overturn the 2020 election results in the state by convening a false slate of Electoral College electors.
Each of the 16 defendants has been charged with eight felony counts, including forgery and conspiracy to commit forgery, for allegedly signing documents attesting falsely that they were Michigan’s “duly elected and qualified electors” for president and vice president.
[Don’t forget that these and other efforts in the “stop the steal” phase of the 2020 Trump campaign are within special counsel Jack Smith’s scope in his investigation. That’s why the target letter may not be entirely about the January 6 riot. The timing seems curious, too, in relation to Trump’s letter from Smith. Keep an eye on these developments. — Ed]
