Average tax cut under WI Tony Evers loses some steam from what it should have been

The new two-year state budget signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers this week will deliver an average income tax cut of $36, down from the $573 average cut taxpayers would have seen under a Republican-authored plan that was largely vetoed by the Democratic governor because it focused relief for the state’s wealthiest residents.

A new analysis Friday from the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau shows Evers’ vetoes reduced the income tax relief in the 2023-25 state budget from an average cut of 15% in the GOP plan to an average tax cut of 0.9%.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Thursday he would again put forward the $3.5 billion income tax cut plan later this summer.
