DeSantis formally suspends mayor charged with voter fraud

Anthony DeFillipo, mayor of North Miami Beach, was charged with three counts of voter fraud last week, punishable by up to five years in prison. DeFillipo is accused of living outside of the North Miami Beach, which would violate the city’s charter and mean he committed voter fraud by driving to North Miami Beach to vote three times.

DeSantis suspended him with an executive order on Monday. The mayor’s lawyers called the charges a “political hit job.”

[The Florida state constitution apparently grants governors with broad powers in terms of dealing with corrupt or incompetent elected officials. Other states may have different rules in place. Don’t expect too much criticism over this exercise of executive authority, though; DeFillipo has been formally charged with defrauding voters to attain that position, so some sort of suspension was clearly in order. He’s not guilty until a jury convicts him, but DeFillipo isn’t *entitled* to the office, either. — Ed]
