Moscow hit in drone attack

Moscow was hit by drones Tuesday morning, in what appeared to be the first attack on residential areas of the Russian capital since the invasion of Ukraine and a dramatic display that the Kremlin’s war was increasingly coming home.

The incident caused damage to some buildings and forced residents to evacuate homes, local officials said.

It comes weeks after an alleged drone attack on the Kremlin itself and following days of deadly Russian bombardment against civilians in Kyiv, as events far from the front lines take the spotlight ahead of Ukraine’s planned counteroffensive.

[Hmmm. I’d have bet that the first drone attack on the Kremlin was a false-flag op meant to rally Russians around Vladimir Putin. This one might be as well, but it also could be some sort of operation by the Ukrainians or their sympathizers. It looks more like a way to bring the war home to the Muscovites after Putin has mainly shielded them from its consequences until now. If so, don’t expect too much political blowback. These strategies for civilian intimidation have a long history, from the London Blitz to the bombing of Hanoi right up to Kyiv today. It rarely has the intended effect, and sometimes can result in even more resolve to keep fighting. — Ed]
