HGTV spent an estimated $1.9 million on the renovations, which also included adding 2,000 square feet to the house and installing the show’s iconic floating staircase and orange kitchen.
Before the home was sold in 2018, it had not changed owners since 1973.
The network had since used the home in specials and other series but is now planning on putting a portion of the proceeds toward Turn Up: Fight Hunger, which is Discovery’s longtime initiative to feed millions of children living with hunger throughout the United States. The sale also includes much of the home’s contents, including a green floral couch in the living room.
[I think HGTV got its money’s worth out of the specials alone, which were a lot of fun. The surviving original cast members took part in the renovation/restoral in a limited series focusing on the work, and also in a couple of other subsidiary specials too. I enjoyed those immensely, being both an HGTV fan AND someone who watched the show in its initial run and again in years of reruns. The house is in a pretty tony area anyway, so it would be expensive to buy no matter what, but the only way that price tag makes sense is if the new owners plan to keep exploiting the commercial potential of the Brady Bunch House. — Ed]
