Rick Perry, a former Texas governor and Trump Energy secretary, is considering launching a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination but he says the chances of him running are small.
“It’s early in the process,” Perry told CNN on Sunday. “It certainly is something that I haven’t taken off the table, but the chances of it happening are probably a little bit slim. …. There’s a lot of time left, and we’ll see how this all works out.”
When asked during the interview whether former President Trump should be the GOP nominee in 2024, Perry said: “I’m still trying to sort that out for myself.”

[I’m a big fan of Rick Perry, but he had his shot and his window. At 73, he’s too old to offer a youth counter to Biden, and as Trump’s Energy Secretary, he doesn’t offer a break from the past either. If voters want to run with nostalgia, they can just vote for Trump. If they want a new direction, Perry isn’t the candidate for it. If Perry gets in, it might be to take shots at his former boss and force a change in direction, but all that does is keep Trump at the center of the GOP. If Perry wants to knock Trump out, he’d be better off becoming a surrogate for a younger, fresher alternative. — Ed]
