Ohio Senate Republican candidate Bernie Moreno (R-OH) proposed reparations for white people who fought in the Union army during Civil War when he announced his run for the US Senate.
He said: “We stand at the shoulders of giants, don’t we? We stand on shoulders of people like John Adams, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington. That this group of people took on the largest empire in history.
“They said no, we will not stand for this. That same group of people later, White people, died to free Black people. It’s never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America.
“That’s not talked about in schools very much, is it? They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country.
[This will cause quite a dismissive handwave, probably quite similar to the one I get when I site the 650K lives lost in the Civil War as reparations enough, or the service of my great-great-grandfather in Lew Wallace’s Ohio regiment. He never owned slaves, yet went to war. “Oh,” the reparations crowd says, “He fought for the Union. Not to free black men.” How would they know – rather arrogant to assume his motives. Just as arrogant to blithely write off the tremendous sacrifice made by so manly, even through the post-war years. A British reparations activist in England tried this tack on a lady opposed to them. She was met with an argument for reparations for the descendants of all the British sailors who’d lost their lives shutting down the slave trade across the world’s oceans. The activist was reduced to a sputtering delight ~ Beege]
