Laredo’s 550 Pizzeria was crowned World Pizza Champions on Wednesday, March 29 at the International Pizza Expo & Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While being announced as the seventh and final World Champion from this year’s competition, 550 Pizzeria owner Janet Zapata was lauded for both her dedication to her craft and her dedication to the community.

“Last and certainly not least is a pizza maker that embodies everything that is beautiful about this industry,” the announcer said. “She is hungry, she is pushy, and she is selflessly dedicated to her pizzeria. She seeks not only to make her pizzeria rise but her community rise. She is the American dream, and her humility, her kindness and her ability to do what people think can not be done has yet to be seen.”
