Third time not the charm? Sohn on verge of another flop

President Biden’s nominee for an open seat on the Federal Communications Commission, Gigi Sohn, appears stalled in committee and is in danger of failing to reach the full Senate floor for a vote, according to Democratic Senate officials.

After a contentious Commerce Committee hearing two weeks ago, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), the chair, has yet to schedule a vote on Sohn’s confirmation.

That delay — coupled with skepticism from Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and continued opposition from the Fraternal Order of Police — has led some Senate officials to conclude that Sohn’s nomination is in serious trouble, like it was in the last Congress.

[Even if it got out of committee, it might be months before Chuck Schumer could call a floor vote — if ever. Both John Fetterman and Dianne Feinstein are hospitalized and expected to be gone for weeks, and that makes the Senate 49/49. Add to that the risk that red-state Senate Dems face in 2024, plus potential opposition from independent Kyrsten Sinema and increasingly disaffected (or posing as such) Joe Manchin, and this looks like Sohn’s headed for yet another flop. — Ed]
