[I got an education early on this topic. I grew up in SoCal where that kind of condescending term hadn’t been used, so I was unaware of the implications until I was in a conversation with two black co-workers. I said something like, “Boy, I’d like to know –” when one of them immediately said, “Who are you calling boy?” They realized that my stunned look meant I had no idea what they meant, and they explained — very nicely and avuncularly — how that had been used in the past. I was eighteen at the time and have never forgotten it, nor have I forgotten their graciousness once they realized no ill intent was involved. Biden is nearly 80 and grew up in Delaware, so he should know better by now. — Ed]
