The US political climate has become so partisan and so vindictive that parties and partisans now openly daydream about prosecuting their opponents – not degrading politically, or ousting from office, as has always been customary in US politics, but prosecution.
That prosecution is now so openly discussed suggests how caustic the political environment has become.
Liberals, for example, have been openly daydreaming about prosecuting former President Donald Trump for years. Trump has been impeached twice; the House’s Democrat-led January 6th committee recommended that the Justice Department charge Trump; other investigations into Trump’s conduct are under way. Trump could potentially be charged with a crime – which would mark the first time in US history a former president was ever charged criminally.
