Another team is designing ammonia fuel engines for use in marine vessels. They note one of the challenges is dealing with nitrogen oxide combustion products…which are environmentally less friendly than carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel use.

[This seems way more fraught than promising. New-gen nuclear looks much better for electricity generation, and natural gas would still be better for transportation than this idea. Even hydrogen fuel cell technology looks better from both an emissions and advanced-stage perspective, although that also has some significant safety issues that have yet to be resolved. — Ed]
