The use of puberty blockers in children is controversial because the psychological effects are unknown, in addition to unknowns about how bone and brain development may be affected. Puberty blockers are often the first step before children are later prescribed cross-sex hormones, where they will develop irreversible physical changes. Long-term cross-sex hormone treatment may also cause permanent infertility.
