Former Trump Cabinet official: House standoff shows Trump influence waning

Rep.-elect Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), who served as Interior secretary in former President Donald Trump’s administration, conceded the former president’s influence is waning as his endorsement of Kevin McCarthy’s bid for House speaker has failed to break loose any votes to date.

Zinke: “Certainly he has influence …”

CNN: “It’s waning?”

Zinke: “Absolutely. He’s behind McCarthy, and they ignored him and in some cases they called him out.”

But Zinke, who has backed McCarthy on every ballot, was quick to add: “Chaos weakens the institution. It weakens the credibility of the members and I think it frustrates America that we’re dysfunctional.”
