Lawmakers on the congressional January 6 committee are preparing to vote on a list of criminal referrals against former President Donald Trump, including possibly a serious charge of insurrection against the former president.

The committee, made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans, will consider recommending to the Department of Justice at least three charges against Trump, among them a federal charge of engaging in “rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States.”

That charge would stem from Trump’s alleged oversight of the brief Capitol riot on Jan. 6, which critics and commentators have argued was a violent attempt to overthrow the U.S. government.
