Co-star Ferrell told the Wall Street Journal the film addressed how women are treated in society and the Patriarchy in general.

We still have no idea what the finished product will look like. Gerwig and co. may weave satire into the IP in ways that delight audiences of all ages and backgrounds. She previously delivered the critically hailed “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” remake. The actress-turned-auteur’s talents are clear.

Or, her film could wield a feminist cudgel and sap the fun out of the toy franchise.
