The reason we are a constitutional republic and not a democracy is that our Founding Fathers created our government to protect our God-given rights. The Declaration of Independence says, “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” That is a revolutionary idea that breaks us away from kings.
Democracies give way to tyrannies, which is why communists embrace it. Carl Sandburg wrote, I am the People, the Mob. It is an unrhymed, un-metered absurdity that passes itself off as a poem:
“I am the people—the mob—the crowd—the mass.
“Do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me?
“I am the workingman, the inventor, the maker of the world’s food and clothes.
“I am the audience that witnesses history. The Napoleons come from me and the Lincolns. They die. And then I send forth more Napoleons and Lincolns.”
Baloney.
