Juan Williams' constitutional indifference

Williams said “I mean, the argument is the Second Amendment. You know, do you think that the founders really had in mind people having weapons that are best intended for a battlefield, you know, in the hands of private people? I mean, that’s the argument. The American people agree with President Biden on this one.”

It’s breathtakingly stupid to ask whether the founders wanted “people having weapons that are best intended for a battlefield.” The Founding Fathers intended for a “well-armed militia” to prevent tyrannical governments from usurping individuals’ rights. They’d just finished fighting a Revolutionary War to free themselves from a tyrant’s dictates. Why would they leave themselves vulnerable to another tyrant’s dictates? This is the text of the Second Amendment:

A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

The keys to the Second Amendment are “the right of the people” and “being necessary to the security of a free state.” The Second Amendment wasn’t written to guarantee the right to go hunting, as liberals so often pretended. It was implemented to protect a free people.
