Hochul won a base-turnout election in New York ... barely

A last-minute push by top national Democrats to turn out the vote in New York City may have played a significant role in securing a victory for Gov. Kathy Hochul, according to a Times Union analysis of state election data.

The outcome may also have hinged on the low interest of unaffiliated voters even as Republicans turned out at rates typically seen in a presidential race, the analysis found. …

If turnout had sunk to the levels seen in the Bronx (29 percent), it could have cost Hochul the election. That borough had the lowest turnout in the state, despite having the highest violent crime rate in the city and the governor’s race being shaped in large part by messages on how to reduce crime.

Zeldin, who had promised massive turnout on Long Island, ultimately delivered — but it just wasn’t enough.

“Yes, they call this the midterm, but when they see the numbers coming out of Nassau County, people will say, ‘Was that a presidential election?'” Zeldin said at a Nassau County rally days before the election.
