[Dianne Feinstein will have to decide soon whether she wants to run for re-election in 2024. Her capabilities have been repeatedly questioned by media and fellow Democrats, and presumably she will choose to bow out at the end of her term. Schiff won re-election to his House seat last week and would be in Congress at least until then. If Feinstein stepped down before then, Gavin Newsom could appoint Schiff — but he would be under tremendous pressure to appoint a black woman instead of a white man. And there’s no guarantee that Schiff would win a nomination under normal circumstances in 2024 either, given the same “diversity” pressures on Democrats in California. — Ed]
