Endangered Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) is going on air Friday with a TV ad focusing on abortion rights — the latest sign that a growing number of swing-district Democrats view it as a winning issue in the fall.
The spot, her first television ad of the general election, which was shared first with POLITICO, comes three days after a Democratic upset in a New York special election, where Rep.-elect Pat Ryan made access to abortion a central theme of his campaign.
The 30-second ad takes aim at Spanberger’s GOP opponent, Prince William County Supervisor Yesli Vega, warning that she supports a total ban on abortion with no exceptions, such as those for rape, incest or the life of the mother.
Vega handed Spanberger a rare opening when she was caught on tape casting doubt on the idea that women can get pregnant from rape. The spot warns that Vega once said only God can decide the life of the mother.
