Poll: Are we in a recession? Two in three voters say yes

Over the past two years, the share of registered voters who said they believe the United States is in a recession climbed to 65%, compared with 51% who said the same in a survey conducted during the 2020 recession. The rise was fueled by Republicans: 78% said in the new survey that they believe the country is currently in a recession, compared with just 37% who said the same in March 2020.

In the latest survey, 15% of voters said they didn’t know or had no opinion regarding the country’s recession status. That figure is down from 25% who said in 2020 that they didn’t know if the country was in a recession.

Independent voters’ perceptions tracked with the broader electorate: 65% said they believed the country is currently in a recession, an uptick of 18 percentage points compared with March 2020, while roughly 1 in 5 believe the opposite.

A majority of Democrats (53%) said they believe the United States is currently in a recession, though that share is down 13 points from the March 2020 survey.
