Brooks and Trump had a phone conversation as recently as last Monday without any mention of the endorsement being in peril, according to Brooks’ campaign. But Trump gave an interview the next day in which he called Brooks “disappointing.” Then, without warning, the former president announced his decision in a statement sent out to reporters…
Minutes later, the Alabama congressman went on WERC, a Birmingham talk radio station, to hit back at Trump.
“He didn’t have the courtesy or the chutzpah or whatever to let me know first, so somewhat blindsided me this morning,” Brooks said, still in shock from the surprise of hearing the news at the same time as everyone else. “But it is what it is. It’s not about what happened in the rally, because the rally speech that I gave on that particular subject was almost exactly the same as what I said on January the 6th.
“We’ve got to put our bad play behind us. We lost. You got to go to the next play, and the next play is 2022, 2024 elections.”
