Young Americans are really down on democracy and reeling from the pandemic

According to the new data, a majority of young Americans are worried about the state of U.S. democracy, reported feeling “depressed” and “hopeless” in the last two weeks and say they are a different person because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Specifically, 52 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds believe that American democracy is either “in trouble,” or “failing,” according to the poll and only 7 percent of young Americans view the U.S. as a “healthy democracy.”

More than a year after the 2020 election that ex-president Donald Trump falsely claims was fraudulent, nearly half of young Republicans place the chances of a second civil war at 50 percent or higher, compared to 32 percent of Democrats, and 38 percent of independents voters.

Houston, we’ve got a democracy problem. Only 57 percent of 18-to-29 year-olds say that it’s “very important” that the U.S. is a democracy; 7 percent of respondents say either “not very” or “not at all important.”
