On the actor’s final reach for the gun, the film’s director, Joel Souza, said he heard a whipping noise, followed by a loud pop, according to the affidavit prepared and released by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office…

Mr. Russell said after returning from lunch, he had stepped out for about five minutes when he saw Messrs. Baldwin and Souza and Ms. Hutchins were preparing for the scene with the firearm, according to the affidavit. Mr. Russell wasn’t sure it had been checked because of his absence, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, Mr. Russell said Mr. Baldwin had been “very careful” in handling firearms, at one point making sure a child wasn’t near him when he was discharging the weapon during a previous scene.
